1. Permit Imprints, a.k.a. Bulk Mail Indicia
Your mailing material must include a bulk mail permit imprint, a.k.a. indicia. The style of the permit imprint should be exactly as follows:
| PRSRT STD |
PRSRT STD |
| U.S. POSTAGE |
U.S. POSTAGE |
| PAID |
PAID |
| VA BEACH VA |
DATAPRO |
| PERMIT # |
DIRECT MAIL |
[The permit # must be a valid number issued by the U.S.P.S.]
[If using a company name instead of the city/state and permit #, the company name and return address of the sender must be included on the mailing material, in the correct location.]
It is preferable for you to include the permit imprint when designing and printing your material. If it is omitted, we can print it for an additional fee.
Note that Postal regulations require that all mail pieces bearing a permit imprint or mailed at any bulk or presort rates must be presented to the Post Office issuing the permit, along with the appropriate postage statement and amount of postage due. We only do mailings from the Virginia Beach and Norfolk Bulk Mail facilities.
A permit imprint does not represent prepayment of postage, and mail bearing a permit imprint MUST NOT be deposited in street collection boxes. Violation of these regulations may result in the permanent revocation of your organization’s mailing permit.

2. Clear Zone
The clear zone is the space necessary to print the address and bar code on the mailing material. This must be a minimum of 4" from the right side and 3" from the bottom edge of the mail piece. If a return address is printed it cannot exceed 33% of the height and 50% of the length of the mail piece.

3. How to Design and Print an Automation-Compatible Flyer (Overview)
DESIGN:
Create the art work that you want on the inside of the flyer. HEAVY BOLD PRINT should be used minimally, if at all. When creating the art work that you want on the outside of the flyer, caution should be exercised that the printing does not interfere with the clear zone and that a permit imprint is added.

The permit imprint is printed on the upper-right corner of the address side, where a postage stamp would normally be placed. Make sure the permit imprint is correct and allowable for the city in which you are mailing. DataPro Direct Mail, LLC, only mails within the Hampton Roads Sectional Center Facility.
- SHAPE AND FOLDING
It is important that a letter-size flyer be longer than it is tall. Flyers must be machine folded, with the fold at the bottom and the open edge at the top. Under certain circumstances flyers must be tabbed in the center of the open end opposite the fold.
- PRINTING
- PAPER WEIGHT
All flyers for the same mailing must be printed on the same weight and size paper.
- PAPER TYPES
The paper must have sufficient opacity (density) to prevent printing on the inside of the flyer from showing through in the clear zone.
These are general guidelines to assist you in working with your printer to design and create a flyer that, when combined with mailing list maintenance and acceptable addressing standards, will be automation-compatible and therefore mailed at the lowest available rate. - PAPER WEIGHT
If you are using plain white #10 envelopes, the paper weight should be at least 20#. Non-paper envelopes must be approved by the Postal Service.
- INSERTS
All inserts for the same mailing must be printed on the same size and weight paper. Inserts must be machine folded.
Although we can have your inserts folded and inserted, there are additional charges for this. Instead, we recommend the following:
Send the envelopes to us, with a Mailing Order Form indicating which lists to use for addressing. We will address the envelopes and return them to you or make them available for pickup by you. We will attach instructions on how to insert and seal the envelopes. Return the stuffed and sealed envelopes to us for mailing.
